Mesothelioma: Its Causes Other Than Asbestos Exposure

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs. It is commonly found in individuals who were exposed to large amounts of asbestos. Asbestos isn't the only cause, however. There are many other possible causes that will increase your risk of being diagnosed with the disease.

Exposure to Other Mineral Fibers

Exposure to other mineral fibers, such as zeolite can also cause damage to the lungs and may eventually lead to a diagnosis of mesothelioma.

Radiation may also contribute to a person’s risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma. Although there is more research to be done, radiation can damage the inside of the lungs and make breathing difficult.

Genetics, as well as age and gender, can also play a role in whether or not you are at risk of contracting mesothelioma. While some people may be at higher risk than others, their genetics may play a role in whether or not the disease affects them.

Certain vaccines that were used to fight polio in the years between ’55 and ’63 may have been contaminated with a dangerous virus known as Simian virus 40. The studies may not be fully conclusive, but they do show a link between the vaccine and mesothelioma cases.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma and are unsure of how you would have contracted the disease, call the Asbestos attorneys at Gaylord and Nantais.
